This conversation between a novelist and a historian will discuss the entangled roots of two closely related types of narrative: history and historical fiction. It will look at the ways in which what might look like very different disciplines actually depend on similar approaches and strategies. Along the way we’ll talk some about what makes good (and bad) narrative history, and what makes good (and bad) historical fiction.
Andrea Barrett writes historical stories and novels. Her books include the National Book Award winner Ship Fever, Archangel, The Air We Breathe, and The Voyage of the Narwhal. She lives in Lewis, NY.
Andy Buchanan teaches history at the University of Vermont. He has written extensively on World War II, including American Grand Strategy in the Mediterranean during World War II (2014) and World War II in Global Perspective, 1931-1953: A Short History (2019). He lives in Whallonsburg, NY.
The Winter 2021 Lyceum lectures will be presented via Zoom. You can access them through your computer, smartphone, or by dialing in on a regular phone (audio only). You must register IN ADVANCE so we can email you the Zoom link. You can register for the entire series or for an individual lecture.
