John Mesick in conversation with Steven Engelhart about their work and passions as historic preservationists

The Fall Lyceum presents a five-week series of conversations that will dig deep into topics of concern and significance for the region.

John Mesick, a distinguished preservation architect, and Steven Engelhart, the long-time executive director of Adirondack Architectural Heritage, will have a far-ranging conversation about what brought them to this field, what their biggest joys and disappointments were, the people and places they came to love, and where the field might be headed.  

John Mesick graduated from the Pratt Institute with a bachelor's degree in architecture. A Fulbright scholarship to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, in Copenhagen, Denmark, helped broaden his appreciation of European architecture. John then designed for Eero Saarinen & Associates before becoming a project manager and architect, then partner, of Mesick Cohen Wilson Baker Architects. His  projects read like a what's-what of historic structures and include: George Washington's boyhood Ferry Farm home, James Madison's Montpelier, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and Poplar Forest, the Blair House in Washington, D.C., Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesen, and four state capitols.  

Steven Engelhart was the executive director of Adirondack Architectural Heritage for 27 years, during which time the organization led efforts to save and restore Camp Santanoni, preserved a dozen Adirondack fire towers, helped hundreds of people rehabilitate their historic buildings, and created a preservation ethic in the region.
