Demolition Derby: Hot dusty pits, male drivers tattooed and mostly shirtless, family members, close friends all hoping to crash their way to victory by being the last car running…

For the last ten years, the tight-knit derby community in upstate New York and Vermont has welcomed Sarah Bones, an Essex and Philadelphia-based photographer, into their pits.  She captures their unique culture— a seldom seen side of the sporting world.

In collaboration with the Adirondack Art Association, Whitcomb’s Arts presents an exhibit and slideshow of Bones’ stunning black and white images that span those ten years.  This exhibit will travel to the Essex County Fair August 16-20.

Sarah S. Bones saved for her first 35mm camera at age 13, in 1969. She was soon hitchhiking into Philadelphia so she could photograph the lives and circumstances of people living on the street. As a professional photographer and director, her passion in documenting people in need continued and has carried her across the world and locally, into prisons and homeless shelters.

She joined the collective group Photographers For Hope in 2011 and is a longtime member of both ASMP and the NPPA. You can see more of her work here: https://www.sarahbones.com
