In many parts of the world the formal end of World Wear II in 1945 brought no peace, but instead led directly to a new series of local wars, revolutions, and struggles for national independence. In his new book, From World War to Postwar, Andy Buchanan explores this complex and protracted process—rather than simply Washington’s victory in the world war—that both shaped the new American-led world order and limited its scope. This lecture will focus in particular on discussing the Holocaust in the context of the ‘long’ World War II, examining the ways in which continued antisemitism and the mistreatment of Europe’s Jewish population led directly to the establishment of Israel in 1948.
A frequent Lyceum speaker, Andy Buchanan has been a Senior Lecturer in the History Department at the University of Vermont since 2007. A specialist in Global and Military history, he is the author of numerous articles and book chapters on World War II. His first book, American Grand Strategy in the Mediterranean during World War II, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2014. World War II in Global Perspective was published by Wiley in 2019. His recently published, From World War to Postwar, covers the history of the postwar period through the 1950s. Andy was appointed Faculty Fellow for 2024 at the Miller Center for Holocaust Studies at the University of Vermont.
