Writing novels is a lot like hiking in the Adirondacks. You can't always see your destination, but if you keep the faith and put one foot in front of the other, you'll get there eventually. New York Times bestselling author Kate Messner has written more than sixty books for young readers but none more personal than The Trouble with Heroes, her upcoming novel for young readers that's set in the Adirondacks. Kate will share the process behind her new book as well as a look at the current landscape of children's literature and a call to action to defend educators and librarians being targeted by extremist groups seeking to ban books.

Kate Messner is passionately curious and writes books for kids who wonder, too. Her titles include award-winning picture books like  Over and Under the Snow , The Brilliant Deep, and  How to Write a Story; novels like  All the Answers and Breakout;   the popular Ranger in Time chapter book adventures, and the History Smashers graphic nonfiction series. Kate’s latest project is a multi-author series called The Kids in Mrs. Z’s Class, perfect for elementary school readers who love funny, heartfelt school stories. Her first novel-in-verse, set in the Adirondacks, will be out in April 2025.
