A Wild Idea: How the Environmental Movement Tamed the Adirondacks

A special Summer Lyceum! Tonight’s presentation and discussion looks at the founding of the Adirondack Park Agency (APA) and the way it has shaped the North Country. The Adirondack region forms the nation's largest State Park, with a territory as large as Vermont. Planning experts view the APA as a triumph of sustainability that balances human activity with the preservation of wild ecosystems. However, the story of the APA is a complex, troubled tale of political dueling and communities pushed to the brink of violence.

Based on in-depth interviews with more than five dozen insiders central to the story, Brad Edmondson’s A Wild Idea has been called “necessary reading” by Phil Terrie, and “a comprehensive and fascinating account of a truly important moment in the planet’s conservation history” by Bill McKibbon.

SPEAKER: Journalist Brad Edmundson (www.bradedmondson.com) is the author of several other books, including Ice Cream Social: The Struggle for the Soul of Ben & Jerry’s. He and his wife, Tania Werbizky, live in Ithaca, New York.

Books will be available for sale and signing at the lecture.
