NY Nutgrowers Association Fall Meeting

New York Nutgrowers Association
Fall Meeting

Our 2024 Fall Meeting will be held on Saturday, Oct 19, 2024, at Whallonsburg Grange Hall. Breakfast starts at 8:30 am, and the program begins at 9:00 am.

Morning discussion topics will include growing hazelnuts and English walnuts, creating Adirondack food system resilience, dealing with flooding and drought, grant writing ideas, control of walnut diseases and pests, and seednut stratification (giving nuts a head start for planting next spring). Experienced NYNGA orchardists, nursery operators, and staff members of the Essex County Soil and Water Conservation District will be a part of a panel to answer questions from meeting participants.

After lunch, we will visit Barred Owl Brook Farm, 735 Lakeshore Road, Essex, NY 12936. The primary focus of the owners, Alex Caskey and Audrey Crocker, is to provide fellow producers with high quality genetic inputs for agroforestry production systems in the form of high quality tree crops nursery stock, and Katahdin hair sheep breeding stock selected for performance in a silvopasture system, where tree fodder comprises portion of their diet during the grazing season.

The New York Nut Growers Association is an all volunteer, non-profit organization that promotes nut tree growing in New York State. It's not necessary to be a member of the New York Nut Growers Association (NYNGA) to attend this meeting. A light breakfast and lunch are included in the cost of meeting registration, which is $18/member, $23/non-member. Pre-registration is required to facilitate meal planning. Pants, socks and comfortable walking shoes or boots are suggested for the afternoon farm tour. Please check the weather in advance and plan appropriately.

Please bring nuts from your best producing nut trees for sharing with others. If you have potted trees from trees with superior genetics that you wish to share or sell please bring them as well. Sharing genetics from good tasting, easy cracking nut trees is an ongoing tradition of the NYNGA. Craftspeople are welcome to bring their wares. Signs announcing the meeting location will be placed about a quarter mile from the driveway entrance in both the east and west directions.
